Is Sugaring Painful? Understanding the Experience

Sugaring is a method of hair removal that involves applying a natural sugar paste to the skin and removing it—along with the hair—by hand. Because the hair is removed from the root, discomfort is to be expected.

However, many clients find sugaring more tolerable than waxing for a few key reasons.

How Sugaring Works and What It Feels Like

The sugar paste is applied slightly warmer than body temperature, so there is no risk of burns. It adheres to the hair and dead skin cells—not live skin—making removal gentler on the skin barrier.

Clients often describe the sensation during sugaring as a quick sting, tug or deep pulling sensation, especially during the molding phase (when the sugar is being glided behind the hair before being removed). If the hair is long or coarse, this sensation may be strong. It is less about taking it off and rather about putting it on.

Some believe going slow makes it easier, but in my experience, moving with confidence and rhythm tends to be better for most people. We want to get you through the experience before your body has time to dwell on it.

Duration of Pain

One of the key differences between sugaring and waxing is how quickly the discomfort fades.

Because sugaring doesn’t traumatize the skin in the same way, most clients report that any soreness subsides quickly—often by the time the appointment ends.

The good news.

The pain doesn’t stick around.

By the time we’re working on the other side, the side we started on usually feels just fine.

Factors That Influence Sensitivity

Pain tolerance varies from person to person. Several factors can affect how sugaring feels:

  • Hair thickness and density
  • Skin hydration
  • Hormonal changes
  • Level of experience with hair removal

Preparation tips:

  • Hydrate well before your appointment
  •  Take an over-the-counter pain reliever (like Advil) about 45 minutes prior if you’re concerned
  • Communicate openly with your sugarist—they're trained to adjust pacing and technique as needed

Why Clients Return

Despite the pain, many clients return because of the results and experience.

Sugaring can reduce hair growth over time, prevent ingrown hairs, and leave skin feeling smoother with less irritation.

It’s also about more than the service. Many people find that committing to themselves in this way—whether for an upcoming vacation, a confidence boost, or simply self-maintenance—feels empowering.

In Summary

Yes, sugaring involves pain too, but it is typically:

  • Short-lived
  • Gentler than waxing
  • Highly effective
  • Well worth it for many people

I recommend believing it's going to be worse than it ever really is. Just remember you are in control, always.

Note, if you're new to sugaring, nervous, or simply curious—ask your sugarist questions, come in prepared from pre care tips, and know that your comfort is the priority.
